I learned something today.
I have this class, where for the most part I haven’t learned anything.
In this class, I had to read many books, with which I mostly disagreed.
Then I would go home and write my opinion on the papers to hand in.
Over time, these papers were filled with a continuous stream of bile
which I had built up in my system.
I viewed it as an emotional cleanse.
Boy was I proud of them.
Toward the end of the class, the papers got particularly nasty.
Yet I still got good grades on them.
The final book I read was that of my professor for the class.
He is a man whom I view as crazy, and not very likable.
So, after I read his book, I wrote perhaps the most disgustingly mean paper I could.
It got a little too personal.
I went to turn it in, but it was late, and the building was closed,
so I went back to my room and I slept.
I went to give him the paper the next day.
I proceeded to tell him to his face
“I wrote the paper,
but there is a problem.
It is mean.
It is very mean.
And I think that just tossing it to you
and running away
would be cowardly.”
He asked if there was anything wrong with the paper, otherwise.
There wasn’t.
It was critical, which was what the paper was supposed to be.
And he said that was fine,
because a paper that’s really garbage is one that only says nice things,
and refuses to engage with the material.
He said that such a thing wouldn’t affect my grade.
to which I said, “That’s not what I’m worried about.”
“Then what is it?”
“This paper goes out of its way to hurt an otherwise well meaning man.”
We talked for a little while, about beliefs mostly,
and I left, but before I did, he asked if I considered myself an angry person.
“I dunno. I guess I am.”
I walked out of the building, without my paper.
When I wrote the paper, I knew, even before I turned it in, that I couldn’t take it back,
so I didn’t.
Thoughts like mine need to be said,
but I don’t always like saying them.
I find it peculiar that we use a tag like "mature" to describe the juvenile things we see in bad comedies and cheesy action movies, when the really mature things are supposedly family friendly.
