Literature Text

I work at a theater.
At this theater, there’s a racing game.
And whenever it’s not being played, it runs on a loop
of shots from the game,
and highscore tables.
The word “HIGHSCORE” pops on and off all day.
If you look closely however,
You’ll see that the word has seemingly
burned into the screen
even when the highscore table isn’t there.
Like a shadow.
All that word had to do was stay there long enough
and now, even when it’s not there, it’s still there.

I’ve worked at the theater for over two years now,
and I may have just ended the job.
I wonder if my shadow will still be there.
Where will my shadow stay?
What will it do?
I think that it will pace back and forth
between the counter and the wall of the lobby,
Moving as not to let its feet hurt,
Tracing over its footsteps,
and doomed to retrace them,
not as a haunting,
but as a simple memory.

Even while NOT being able to fully understand the meaning in this poem, I'll admit, I liked it - something crazy and profoundly juvenile and awesome about it. Maybe, it's the way that the narrator describes how the theater is just a glorified betting store and people like rehashing old memories because why not. It's a good thought, though: thematically, it kinda makes me wish I took the God damn bet for Pakistan reaching the semi finals in the World Cup (cricket).
