The room was filled with animal heads. On plaques. The heads of deer, moose, buffalo, and what may have been a jackalope were all arranged in a perfect grid, covering every wall at least 12 feet up. I was there to provide the room service: a steak dinner. I was surprised the man inside didn’t have one he killed himself.

“Oh, you’re here! Please come on in.”

The man inside was rather handsome, brown hair and a well kept beard. He smiled at me and I was reminded of a food mascot I saw somewhere once. I couldn’t place which one it was, though.

“If you don’t mind, you can just leave the food on the bed there.”

The bed was covered in what I imagine was a deerskin. It was at this moment that I realized that I was being watched. The man was looking at me of course, but it took a moment to realize that the stuffed heads were watching me, too. The heads were moving, watching my every step. I stepped up to a moose head and read the plaque.

DIED CONTEMPLATING THE NATURE OF EXISTENCE.

“Okay…” I mumbled to myself, and read the plaque of a deer.

WAS DRINKING FROM A STREAM UNTIL THIS MORON SHOT HER IN THE CHEST.

The man approached me from behind. “Admiring some of my trophies, huh? I’m especially proud of this one. It was the last bullet I had on me. Final day of the hunting season. Got it in one shot, isn’t she beautiful?”

I read the plaque of the elk trophy he was referring to.

SO CLOSE.

I was nervous to look these animals in the eyes, since it was readily apparent that they were looking me in mine. I had never had so many creatures look at me at once before. I always saw animals as indifferent to my presence, as long as I didn’t try to kill them. I read the plaque of the Jackalope:

YOUR FRIEND GLUED THE HORNS ON AS A JOKE, JACKALOPES DO NOT EXIST.

“Ah yes. A real Jackalope, can you believe it?” The man laughed heartily to himself.

I didn’t want my head to be on the wall with a plaque reading: “TOOK TOO LONG TO DELIVER A STEAK DINNER,” so I placed the plates neatly on the bed, and inched out as quickly as I could. The eyes of the animals followed me on my way out.

As I exited the room, I turned around and noticed for the first time a golden tag on the door, much like the tags on the plaques inside.

WAS CAUGHT IN A LIFE THAT DIED LONG AGO.
